Our Founder Story

Why I use Magic Therapy as a counselling method?

When I was 13, I was super shy and new people made me nervous. Talking in front of the class was like climbing a giant mountain, and just chatting felt scary. Then, one day in Chinese class, something went wrong while I was reading and everyone laughed, even the teacher. I felt awful.

But later, at a school club meeting, I saw an older student do an amazing card trick. I was so impressed, I begged him to teach me! It took weeks of practice at home, but it wasn’t just about the trick. It was about getting over my shyness. Every time I practiced shuffling the cards or making them appear and disappear, I felt a little braver. I practiced in front of the mirror, for my parents, and even my patient neighbors. Each time, I felt less scared.

Finally, I felt ready to show someone the trick for real. When I did it for a classmate and saw his surprised smile, it was like a magic trick itself! It was the first time I ever felt confident, and it was because I had worked so hard.

Magic became my secret tool for making friends. It helped me break the ice with new people, start conversations, and connect with others. The shy kid I used to be slowly changed. I started to like challenges and enjoy talking to people.

Even now, the spirit of magic is still with me. It reminds me that if you work hard and believe in something amazing, you can achieve anything!

Building Strong Foundations

Structure & Planning: Magic involves routines and planning, skills that translate into your everyday life. Setting goals, practicing, and refining your craft mirrors what’s needed for personal growth. Learning magic reinforces goal setting and perseverance.

Improved Dexterity: Mastering sleights of hand refines your fine motor skills and dexterity, making daily tasks potentially easier. This can be particularly beneficial for those with motor skill development challenges.

Sharpened Thinking: Following instructions and practicing steps in order helps improve your thinking and planning abilities. This can be applied to problem-solving and organization in your daily life.

Performance Ability

Enhancing Your Performance

Adaptive Magic: The beauty of magic is its adaptability! We can find tricks that work for you, even if you have physical limitations. Many tricks require minimal hand movement or specific strength. This ensures inclusivity and allows everyone to participate.

Coordination & Dexterity: Magic can be a fun way to improve your hand-eye coordination and dexterity, making daily activities smoother. This can benefit those with coordination challenges.

Cognitive Boost: The focus required to learn and perform magic can improve your memory and overall cognitive function. This can contribute to improved learning and problem-solving skills.

Using Magic in the Counselling Session

Magic can be a playful way to initiate a conversation and explore topics like self-confidence, setting goals, and overcoming challenges. This can be a disarming and engaging way to begin therapy.

Following an initial discussion, we can explore which magic skills can be used to develop specific goals identified during therapy. For example, learning a trick requiring patience and focus could help with anger management, while practicing a performance piece could boost social interaction skills. Magic becomes a tool to target specific needs.

We’ll regularly review progress and discuss if magic therapy is reaching the intended outcome. This ensures the approach is effective and can be adjusted as needed.
